How To Lose A Black Woman (1999 25th Anniversary Edition)

Bruce Williams feels truly blessed. He is a college educated young man with a career he loves. He has amazing friends and looking from the outside, has a perfect life. Asking Bruce, he’ll say he was incomplete without a special woman in his life to love and spend his life with. After a few failed attempts the traditional way, he starts using Social Media and dating sites to find his true love.

How To Lose A Black Woman is a semi-autobiographical look at relationships and how one wrong turn could destroy one. Through an uncomfortable search, he eventually finds someone who could be his true love but an argument about an ex and the wrong decision causes his world to spiral out of control. He learns a lot about himself and relationships along the way. He uses the short window of time he must fix what was broken before the relationship is deemed beyond repair.

This book personifies a few of the aspects of the modern relationship from Bruce’s point of view. Filled with original poetry, Bruce journals his mission as a teaching tool for others. He’s not perfect nor does he make himself out to be. His journey is all his own right or wrong and he takes his adventures as a learning experience.

While it’s a good story about one aspect of the human spirit, the lesson isn’t for everyone but everyone can see at least a small part of themselves in the book.

I absolutely Loved this book!!!! This book brought back so many childhood memories for me because it is set in the Inner City of St. Louis. I could relate to the characters and feel the emotions as they were happening. The touches of poetry made to book flow properly and gave it a little extra flavor.

H. D. did an awesome job with character development - no drawn out or over the top in details. I would love to see how Geraldine, Andre and Tammy forge ahead in their own stories. I found this one to be a real page turner and kept me interested to the point of not ever wanting to put it down and a little sad when it ended. What can I say, I was looking for more pages to turn.

Praise & Reviews

This story is a true reminder of how to spot, treat, and appreciate a good woman as well as the obstacles that one must overcome to eventually find a soul mate. It is also a portrayal of how we often allow jealousy and naive behaviors destroy a solid partnership. After reading this story, I have gained a better appreciation for significant others and have come to one concluding fact: that trust and love go hand in hand.

H.D. did a wonderful job taking you inside the mind of a man who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to tell you. The main character Bruce has known for a long time that he wants to be in a committed relationship with a Christian woman. He longs for that companionship and commitment that seems to elude most of us. This book takes you through the ups and downs of telephone dating (story was written a decade ago), and the pitfalls of not being honest about your feelings when things do not go according to plan. Bruce's friend Andre is your typical "dog" which creates an interesting contrast between the two. This allows the great qualities of Bruce to shine through. I won't ruin the story for you but Andre may come out of this having learned a thing or two.

It was refreshing to read that men struggle with the same issues women do when it comes to finding and keeping a partner. The best part about it was that this story is actually written by a man. Wow who knew that a man could actually feel this way and be comfortable enough with his feelings to share it with the world. I recommend this book for everyone. This is a great read for men struggling with relationships as well as women who have asked themselves are there really any good men out there? If you are fed up with dead end relationships and can't seem to find the right person check this book out and you might be inspired not to throw in the towel just yet. Mr. or Mrs. right might be right around the corner.
